There once was an old prince – he ruled a large bit of land in the tangle of principalities that existed before the unification of Germany – who learned his wife was cheating on him with a nobleman – a tenant on the massive holding. The prince, being a fair-minded man (especially given the era), wasn’t angry. His wife hadn’t borne a child in some time, so he figured he had nothing to fear about illegitimate offspring with dynastic ambitions. And, besides that, he had been stepping out with numerous women on account of his love for pleasure, and saw little reason to deny his wife the same privilege so long as she was discreet and didn’t shame him publicly.
It wasn’t long before this nobleman dropped by the manse to pay both his respects and his taxes. But his own wife, who usually accompanied him - possibly as a way of furthering the ruse he was there for nothing more than legitimate business - was absent from his suite on this day.
When the prince enquired about her health, the nobleman informed him that the wife was absent because she wasn’t fit to travel: he’d been rough with her after discovering proof of infidelity. And the prince asked his tenant to explain what a fitting punishment for an unfaithful wife should be.
The nobleman, totally unabashed, suggested that she be placed in a barrel containing broken glass and rolled into the waste creek. The prince, smiling all the while, ordered that the nobleman immediately be subjected to that fate. The lesser man complied, of course, because he feared being stripped of his situation.
It's ultimately charity – including mercy in meting justice – that separates the damned from the saved. This is why the Otherworld inhabited by God will also be populated with its share of outrageous sinners at the end of time, while Hell will have an equal share of people who lived nearly spotless lives but for the briefest and most hidden of indiscretions.
Cruelty, cold-heartedness, lovelessness, a lack of mercy – these traits, if not reformed, will damn a soul no matter how legalistic it was in carrying out religious duties.
